Tekakwitha, which means “she who bumps into things”, was born in about 1656 into a Mohawk village in New York. Her eyes were badly damaged and her face scarred because of a smallpox infection, so she was unable to do things other children took for granted. When she was four years old, the same infection killed her parents, a Mohawk chief and Tagaskouita, a Christian Algonquin woman captured in a raid.
Tekakwitha became increasingly interested in her mother’s religion as French Jesuit missionaries traveled among her people, teaching them about Christ. Eventually, Tekakwitha asked one of these priests to teach her and baptize her into the faith. She took the name Catherine or, as the Mohawk said, “Kateri” in honour of Saint Catherine of Siena.
Kateri refused a marriage proposal because she wanted to give herself entirely to Christ. Her family were exceedinly annoyed and scandalised. As a result, Kateri was mocked and given the most challenging work. She eventually escaped to a Christian village where she died of an illness at the age of 24. Her last words were, “Jesus, Mary, I love you.” Fifteen minutes after her death, her face was transformed, no longer scarred, but radiant, an outward sign that Kateri had been received by her Lord and Saviour.
