Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, on December 1579. His father was a Spanish nobleman, and his mother was a freed slave. His father abandoned him and his sister when they were very young, and their childhood was lived in poverty. At the age of twelve, his father decided to claim his children and give them a good education. Although Martin was a devoted Catholic, he struggled to enter a religious Order because he was mixed-race. At the age of 24, he became a lay brother in the Dominican Order of Preachers, where he stayed until his death. St. Martin was known to do many miracles throughout his life. He was able to heal people who were sick and help those in need no matter their origin. He also loved and took care of animals.
His feast day is on 3 November.
